The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is the independent agency of the United States federal government responsible for the nation's civilian space program and for aeronautics and aerospace research. Established in 1958, NASA succeeded the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), marking a new era in U.S. space exploration with a focus on peaceful, civilian applications. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., NASA operates ten field centers across the United States and is organized into three main mission directorates: Human Spaceflight, Research and Technology, and Science.
NASA has led most American spaceflight programs, including Project Mercury, Project Gemini, the Apollo program (which landed humans on the Moon), Skylab, the Space Shuttle, the International Space Station (ISS), and the Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon and eventually to Mars. NASA is also a leader in planetary exploration, Earth science, and astrophysics, operating missions such as the Hubble Space Telescope, Mars rovers (Curiosity, Perseverance), and the James Webb Space Telescope.
The agency is known for its collaborative approach, working with international partners and commercial industry to advance scientific discovery and technology.
